SUMMARY:Colorado Native Plant Master: North Cheyenne Canyon Park
DESCRIPTION:A three week series of classes on native plant identification in the field. We will identify 40-60 plants throughout the course.\n\n\nSchedule: June 4\,11 and 18 from 8:00AM-12:00PM. Participants must attend all three classes for course completion. \nPark Description: North Cheyenne Cañon Park is a city-owned park with over 1\,600 acres. The park has two visitor’s centers and has many many miles of trails. Helen Hunt Falls sits near the top of the park and water from Cheyenne creek flows through the canyon. Imposing walls form either side of the canyon where sandstone and shale is marked by granite outcrops and peaks. Diverse and abundant plant life thrives in these varying ecosystems. \nPLEASE NOTE: This is a field class. There are no bathrooms after we leave the visitor center. The terrain that we will cover in this course is steep with areas of loose gravel. We will cover 2-6 miles each day during the 4 hour class period. If you are concerned about the mileage\, terrain\, or footing\, please consider signing up for our Garden of the Gods class later in the season. \nWe will introduce you to 40-60 plants\, using family features and a botanical key to help identify species. Ecological relationships\, human connections and the potential to use some of these plants in your landscaping will be discussed. In addition\, we will emphasize understanding noxious alien plants and the challenge they present to our native environment. \nTrainers: \nJan Berry completed her Colorado Master Gardener training in 2020 and her Native Plant Master training in 2022. She hikes and camps all over Colorado\, in awe of the variety of ecosystems (and flora) we have in our state. She is working on incorporating more native plants into her landscape in downtown Colorado Springs. \nBarb has a B.S. in Biology (1978 from San Diego State University). She became a Colorado Master Gardener in 2021 and a Native Plant Master in 2022. She loves to identify native plants and is currently attempting to create a native plant area in her backyard (in a space of 10’ x 40’) using seeds and plants. \nPrerequisite: A basic botany class is suggested for those who would like to refresh their botanical knowledge and is highly recommended for those who have minimal background. \nBasic Botany-April 4\, from 4:00-7:00pm \nRegister in advance for this webinar: \nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIkceGvqzgrGNOVvQVtx1oJ1tsnHRIa3YO1 \nPlant Families-April 11\, from 4:00-7:00pm \nRegister in advance for this webinar: \nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJEtcumgqjgjGtdTJfpz1P8dfZWSTiJJWiOj \nNative Plant Master: Participants who pass three NPM courses will receive a Native Plant Master Certificate. SUMMARY:Ladies Hike - Salt Creek Trail (40's & 50's)
DESCRIPTION:Let’s get together and meet some new female friends. This group social hike is for women between the ages of 40’s and 50’s.\n\n\n\nAre you looking for an outlet to meet new people?\nHave you fallen into the habit of staying home because your friends are too busy\, focused on other things?\nAre you wondering how to make friends as an adult – outside of the workplace?\n\n \nIf so\, come along with us on our monthly Ladies hikes! Connect with ladies at the same stage of life as you AND start building a community of local friends. \nThese hikes are meant for meeting new people and helping you find friends to hang out with on a regular basis. \nWe always have a great time looking at the views\, taking photos\, chatting\, and laughing together. Every hike brings a mix of new people\, which makes it a really welcoming group to be in. \nThis group social hike is for women between the ages of 40’s and 50’s. \n\n\nAbout this month’s hike: \nWe’ll hike from the Salt Creek Trailhead in Eagle\, Colorado. You can get there by driving northeast up the road from this parking lot. Please arrive by 9:40 am – hike starts promptly at 9:45 am. Trail is a little uphill. Plan for 2 hours on the trail total. More details to follow in the confirmation email. \n\n\nIt can be a bit scary to put yourself out there in a new group of people. \nYou might be thinking the following: \nWhat if there’s nothing to talk about? We stop often to do ice breaker topics along the hike to give us good conversation starters! We switch up talking buddies along the way\, too\, so you have a chance to chat with many different ladies. \nWhat if I’m a slow hiker? We take our time on these hikes to stop often to chat as a group\, and we never leave anyone behind. Each person varies at their level of hiking experience (from beginner to expert) and we always go at a pace that works for everyone. \n\n\nIt’s so much more fun to do activities when you have friends who want to do them with you. Summer is coming and there are a lot of events to attend! \nWhy not start building your circle of friends now who want to do life with you? \n\n\nWant to join us? Please register so I know to expect you. Registration capped at 16 ladies to keep the group manageable. \nIf you can’t attend this one but want an invite to the next\, please subscribe to this event page\, or subscribe to my newsletter here! I’ll do these monthly on different trails in the Vail Valley area.
