SUMMARY:Colorado Native Plant Master: Garden of the Gods
DESCRIPTION:A three week series of classes on native plant identification in the field. We will identify 40-60 plants throughout the course.\n\n\nSchedule: June 4th\, 11th\, and 18th from 7:30AM-11:30PM. Participants must attend all three classes for course completion. \nPark Description: This is a field class. There are no bathrooms open at the visitor center at the time of the class\, or on the trails\, so please plan accordingly. Garden of the Gods is a popular destination\, known for its rock formations and picturesque views of Pikes Peak. Once a basecamp of the Ute due to it’s abundant plant life and water\, the park is still home to an array of native plant species. \nWe will introduce you to 40-50 plants\, using family features and a botanical key to help identify species. Ecological relationships\, human connections and the potential to use some of these plants in your landscaping will be discussed. In addition\, we will emphasize understanding noxious alien plants and the challenge they present to our native environment. \nTrainers: \nMichele Ritchie became a Colorado Native Plant Master in 2022 and is the Food Systems and Natural Resource Specialist for CSU Extension El Paso County. \nBarb has a B.S. in Biology (1978 from San Diego State University). She became a Colorado Master Gardener in 2021 and a Native Plant Master in 2022. She loves to identify native plants and is currently attempting to create a native plant area in her backyard (in a space of 10’ x 40’) using seeds and plants. \nNative Plant Master Certificate: Participants who pass three NPM courses will receive a Native Plant Master Certificate. This 12 hour class fulfills 1/3 of the 36-hour coursework requirement towards certification as a Native Plant Master. Courses should be taken in different months and/or vegetation zones. Learn more here. \nRequired Textbook: Flora of Colorado by Jennifer Ackerfield. The 2nd edition is preferred if you need to buy this book\, but the 1st edition (2015) is OK because students will be given a list of changes between the 1st and 2nd editions for plants studied during the course. Available through the Colorado Native Plant Society bookstore (https://conps.org/conps-store)\, local and online retail outlets\, and the publisher (800-621-2736). \nWhen/Where to Meet: Meet at the Rock Ledge Parking Lot. Class will begin at 7:30am sharp. On the first day\, please arrive 15 minutes early. Google Maps pin: https://goo.gl/maps/qrvN2w4y9KuKduxg9 \nWhat to Bring: Flora of Colorado by Jennifer Ackerfield; hand lens (10X or greater) available through https://conps.org/conps-store; daypack; bug spray; water; sack lunch; rain\, sun\, wind protection; personal restroom items. \nSpecial Instructions: Please come prepared for moderate to strenuous walking on hot\, cold\, windy\, snowy or rainy days. Class will meet regardless of weather conditions. \nLocation Address: 3105 Gateway Rd\, Colorado Springs\, CO\, 80904 \n \nContact allisa.zurbuchen@colostate.edu with questions. \n______________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nNEW for 2025 Native Plant Master™ Field Courses!  \nAs part of your enrollment in a Native Plant Master™ Field Course\, you will receive a link to two online preparatory courses. These prep courses will prepare you for your in-person field course. They are optional but strongly encouraged.  \nCourse Descriptions:  \nBasic Field Botany & Native Plants Class: The class primarily focuses on developing a basic understanding of botanical terms and features that will help you identify plants in the field. The course also provides a high-level overview of how plants are scientifically classified\, fostering a deeper understanding of how you will communicate about and identify them effectively.     \nNative Plant Identification and Keying Class: This class is all about identifying native plants!  You will begin by focusing on the key characteristics of some of Colorado’s plant families – a starting point for learning native plant genera and species – which is the identity and name of the plant you are studying; and you will learn how to use a dichotomous key—a series of “either-or” questions designed to guide you to the correct identity of a plant. The dichotomous key is the heart of the Native Plant Master™ courses and developing this skill will enhance your experience with your course. To offer practical experiences\, this course includes an interactive dichotomous key for hands-on practice in identifying plants.    \nSpecial Note: You will need to navigate to the online registration using the link provided by your county coordinator after you’re registered for the in-person Native Plant Master™ field course. These online courses open in March\, so the link will be sent in March. After registering for the online classes\, please allow at least 30 minutes to receive email confirmation and login credentials. Be sure to check your SPAM folder for the login information.  \nPlease note that there are no refunds for open entry courses.

SUMMARY:SELF STARTER
DESCRIPTION:Cottonwood Center for the Arts is pleased to announce a juried exhibition for the month of June featuring works in response to an open call to the public: SELF STARTER. \nThe selfie has become a part of our culture that means different things for different living generations in our society. It can be an exercise in narcissism\, ironically indifferent\, politically poignant\, or even just plain candid. For this call\, we asked artists to start with a smart-phone-generated self portrait\, we did not accept works generated by any other type of camera. The portrait must have been taken by the artist of themselves\, not captured by a second party. \nThis digital image was the launching point for a work of art that expresses their relationship with the world\, however they defined that real or virtual space. Artists were free to incorporate any other mediums that called to them. We welcomed non-traditional display formats in addition to all other mediums for consideration. \nCome experience this exhibit and enjoy two floors of open studios + galleries this First Friday from 5-8 pm\, and all month during normal business hours.

SUMMARY:Cave of the Winds Sound Bath
DESCRIPTION:Step into the vast\, echoing chambers of Cave of the Winds and experience the raw power of nature amplified by the powerful vibrations of sound. Beneath towering rock formations sculpted over millions of years\, let soothing sounds of Tibetan and Crystal Singing Bowls\, Gongs\, Native American Flute\, Guitar\, Hand Pan\, and more wash over you. Guided by four musicians – Dr. Gigi Turner\, PsyD\, Dave Patrick\, Steve Manzo\, and Danielle Hess – this sound bath harnesses the cave’s natural acoustics to envelop you in waves of sound that calm the mind\, relax the body\, and restore balance. \nFor generations\, Cave of the Winds has been revered as a place of energy and transformation. The Apache and Ute peoples believed that the Great Spirit of the Wind resided within these depths—and now\, as sound waves ripple through the stone\, you are invited to experience this sacred space in a profound new way! \nThis experience also coincides with the 4/4 in numerology\, a time associated with stability\, grounding\, and divine alignment. The number 4 represents strong foundations and balance—qualities reflected in the cave’s timeless presence and the harmonizing effects of sound. As you surrender to the vibrations\, this powerful moment in time supports intention-setting\, renewal\, and inner alignment. \nJoin us for this one-of-a-kind sound bath – an opportunity to realign\, reset\, and embrace the energy of the Earth! \nMeet the Musicians \nDr. Gigi Turner\, PsyD\, founder and owner of Singing Bowls of the Rockies\, has created Colorado Springs’ premier sound bath sanctuary. Formerly a psychology professor and psychotherapist\, she combines her deep understanding of the mind with the healing power of sound. With over a decade of experience and an extensive collection of more than 100 singing bowls\, Gigi has guided thousands of participants through immersive and restorative sound journeys. Her expertise lies in crafting deeply soothing experiences that calm the nervous system\, promote profound relaxation\, and inspire inner healing. \nDave Patrick\, a lifelong musician and classical guitarist\, brings a rich melodic element to the sound bath experience. With decades of musical expertise\, Dave’s playing creates a soothing atmosphere that enhances the resonance of the bowls and instruments\, weaving harmonic textures that invite a sense of deep peace and reflection. \nSteve Manzo is a multi-instrumentalist with a passion for sound and its healing potential. Influenced by his own experiences with sound baths\, Steve brings a unique musical perspective to each session\, offering layers of meditative frequencies. Currently studying film and game scoring\, his expertise in composition and music production allows him to craft immersive auditory landscapes. When he’s not accompanying Singing Bowls of the Rockies\, Steve connects with the local music scene\, works on personal projects\, and finds inspiration in the sounds of nature. \nSpecial Offer: \nA complimentary 1-hour integration session is available post-event to reflect on any emotions or experiences that arise during the sound bath. \nWhat is a Sound Bath? \nA sound bath offers a unique meditative journey\, immersing participants in a sea of soothing sound waves generated by instruments like singing bowls\, gongs\, and chimes\, known for their rich overtones. In this deeply relaxing experience\, individuals lie down and are enveloped by resonant sounds\, which facilitate a shift in brain waves from an active to a more tranquil and dreamlike state. \nThe essence of a sound bath lies in fostering profound rest\, facilitating self-exploration and discovery\, and providing relief from stress\, anxiety\, and daily concerns. It serves as a therapeutic practice aimed at calming the nervous system and clearing the mind\, allowing participants to deeply connect with their bodies and inner selves. \nUnderpinning the sound bath experience is the science of vibrations\, a fundamental principle that recognizes the vibratory nature of all existence. From the microscopic cells within our bodies to the infinite expanse of the universe\, every element resonates at its own frequency\, together creating a harmonious symphony of life. Sound baths utilize resonance to realign our vibrational frequencies\, promoting holistic well-being and a deep sense of harmony with the universe. \nWhat to Bring (Please Read): \nYou will need to bring a yoga mat or cushion to lie on and a pillow. We also recommend bringing items for warmth: a sleeping bag\, blankets\, and/or warm clothing\, as the cave can get cold. Please dress comfortably\, bring water\, and eat beforehand. \nDetails: \n100 Cave of the Winds Rd\, Manitou Springs\, CO 80829 \nEarly Bird Tickets – 10% OFF! Grab your spot early and save!

SUMMARY:Ladies Hike - Stag Gulch Trail (40's - 60's)
DESCRIPTION:Let’s get together and meet some new female friends. This group social hike is for women in the ages of 40’s to 60’s.\n\n\n\nAre you looking for an outlet to meet new people?\nHave you fallen into the habit of staying home because your friends are too busy\, focused on other things?\nAre you wondering how to make friends as an adult – outside of the workplace?\n\n \nIf so\, come along with us on our monthly Ladies hikes! Connect with ladies at the same stage of life as you AND start building a community of local friends. \nThese hikes are meant for meeting new people and helping you find friends to hang out with on a regular basis. \nWe always have a great time looking at the views\, taking photos\, chatting\, and laughing together. Every hike brings a mix of new people\, which makes it a really welcoming group to be in. \nThis group social hike is for women in the ages of 40’s 60’s. \n\n\nAbout this month’s hike: \nWe’ll hike from the Stag Gulch Trailhead in Edwards. \nPlease arrive to the trail by 9:40 am – hike starts promptly at 9:45 am. If you are carpooling\, you will need to arrive earlier to meet us at the location. Plan for 2 hours on the trail total. More details to follow in the confirmation email. \n\n\nIt can be a bit scary to put yourself out there in a new group of people. \nYou might be thinking the following: \nWhat if there’s nothing to talk about? We stop often to do ice breaker topics along the hike to give us good conversation starters! We switch up talking buddies along the way\, too\, so you have a chance to chat with many different ladies. \nWhat if I’m a slow hiker? We take our time on these hikes to stop often to chat as a group\, and we never leave anyone behind. Each person varies at their level of hiking experience (from beginner to expert) and we always go at a pace that works for everyone. \n\n\nIt’s so much more fun to do activities when you have friends who want to do them with you. \nWhy not start building your circle of friends now who want to experience new things? \nHere’s what some of the hikers are saying: \n“What a great group of women to spend my morning with! So appreciative to Emma for organizing this group hike and to all the fantastic women who I met today. This is just the beginning!” – R \n“Thank you\, Emma for organizing this hike. I really enjoyed meeting some lovely likeminded ladies while getting outside on this gorgeous morning. I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone better.” – L \n\n\nWant to join us? Please register so I know to expect you. Registration capped at 10 ladies to keep the group manageable. \nIf you can’t attend this one but want an invite to the next\, please subscribe to this event page\, or subscribe to my newsletter here!
