DESCRIPTION:The El Paso County Conservation District & CSU Extension aim to reintroduce heirloom apple trees and promote sustainable land stewardship.\n\n\nThe A.P.P.L.E. Project\n— Apple Preservation 🍎 Planting 🍎 Land Education —\n \nApple Preservation\nPlant a Tree\, Cultivate Knowledge\, Harvest a Legacy\nIf you participated in this class in 2025\, you should not register for the 2026 class.  It is a repeat of the 2025 class. \nPreserving apples is a time-honored tradition that connects seasonal abundance to year-round nourishment. In this hands-on workshop\, you’ll learn practical techniques for safely preserving apples at home\, including water bath canning and discussion of freezing and dehydration. \nIn partnership between the El Paso County Conservation District and Colorado State University Extension\, this class supports the revival of Colorado’s historic fruit tree culture while promoting sustainable land stewardship and water conservation. \n______________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nLed by CSU Extension educators\, this class is designed for small acreage landowners\, backyard growers\, and anyone participating in the A.P.P.L.E. Project—Apple Preservation 🍎 Planting 🍎 Land Education—who wants to build practical skills for making the most of their harvest. \n \nWhat You’ll Learn:\n\nHow to safely preserve apples using water bath canning\nHow to make shelf-stable apple pie filling\nTips for canning\, freezing\, and dehydrating apples\nOverview of food safety practices and equipment needed for home preservation\n\n \nIncluded with Registration:\n\nA Starter Canning Kit to take home\nHands-on experience with CSU Extension Specialists\nAccess to El Paso Conservation District subject matter experts\nApple pie filling made during the class\nConnection to a growing network of local landowners and orchard enthusiasts\n\n \nInformation on the Tree Incentive Program\nThis class is one of three Optional classes (see below) for participants in the A.P.P.L.E. Project’s micro-orchard initiative. \nIf you want to take part in the Tree Incentive Program\, you must complete all of the required workshops (see below). This ensures that landowners are equipped with the knowledge and tools to establish and maintain resilient\, water-wise orchards and qualifies you to receive a free apple tree. \n______________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nOptional Classes presented by the A.P.P.L.E. Project\nWhile this class is not required for the A.P.P.L.E. Project’s tree incentive program\, it provides valuable skills for making the most of your orchard’s harvest and deepening your connection to Colorado’s apple-growing heritage. \n\nApple Heritage & History in the Pikes Peak Resion Class– October 15\, 2025Explore the rich history of apple cultivation in the Pikes Peak Region with a lecture led by the Director of the McAllister House Museum. Discover the legacy of local orchards and heritage varieties.\nApple Preservation Class #1 – October 22\, 2025Hands-on class in water bath canning and other apple preservation techniques – such as freezing and dehydrating. Participants take home what they make – shelf-stable apple pie filling – and receive a starter canning kit.\nApple Preservation Class #2 – October 19\, 2026 – Check back in 2026 for the link.Repeat of Apple Preservation 2025 class. This is a Hands-on class in water bath canning and other apple preservation techniques – such as freezing and dehydrating. Includes a beginner’s pruning kit.\nBugs and Crud – May 30\, 2026 Learn to identify and manage common pests and diseases using both organic and conventional methods.
