SUMMARY:Colorado Native Plant Master: Tunnel Drive
DESCRIPTION:A three week series of classes on native plant identification in the field. We will identify 40-60 plants throughout the course.\n\n\nSchedule: May 15\, 22 and 29 from 8:30AM-12:30PM. Participants must attend all three classes for course completion. \nPark Description: Tunnel drive is a beautiful\, flat walk that parallels the Arkansas River. There is a vault toilet at the trailhead\, but no bathrooms beyond that. The trail is fairly flat and even after the first hill. \nWe will introduce you to 40-60 plants\, using family features and a botanical key to help identify species. Ecological relationships\, human connections and the potential to use some of these plants in your landscaping will be discussed. In addition\, we will emphasize understanding noxious alien plants and the challenge they present to our native environment. \nTrainers: \nIrene Shonle is a retired Horticulture Specialist for CSU Extension\, and has taught Native Plant Master classes since 2003. She has a PhD in Ecology\, and was with CSU Extension for 23 years. She is passionate about using native plants in the landscape\, and has a large native plant garden at her house. \nNative Plant Master Certificate: Participants who pass three NPM courses will receive a Native Plant Master Certificate. This 12 hour class fulfills 1/3 of the 36-hour coursework requirement towards certification as a Native Plant Master. Courses should be taken in different months and/or vegetation zones. The 2nd edition is preferred if you need to buy this book\, but the 1st edition (2015) is OK because students will be given a list of changes between the 1st and 2nd editions for plants studied during the course. You will begin by focusing on the key characteristics of some of Colorado’s plant families – a starting point for learning native plant genera and species – which is the identity and name of the plant you are studying; and you will learn how to use a dichotomous key—a series of “either-or” questions designed to guide you to the correct identity of a plant. The dichotomous key is the heart of the Native Plant Master™ courses and developing this skill will enhance your experience with your course. SUMMARY:Run to the Shrine
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, May 17 or Sunday\, May 18\, 2025 for Run to the Shrine\, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s annual fundraiser run/walk. This 4-mile casual run/walk winds through the Zoo and up to Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun\, with leopards\, lions and elephants along the way. Enjoy stunning views of Colorado Springs below while ascending nearly 1\,000 feet in elevation\, before descending back down into the Zoo. Run to the Shrine is the ONLY time foot traffic is allowed on Shrine Road. Participants will start the ascent at their leisure\, and there will be no official timing services. \n  \nThe race is a great route for competitive athletes\, weekend warriors\, casual walkers and families of all ages. \n  \nRun to the Shrine registration includes evening Zoo admission until 8 p.m. and a commemorative T-shirt featuring our Hoffmann’s two-toed sloth mascot. All proceeds help feed and care for Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s animals. Since the Zoo is a nonprofit that does not receive any tax support\, community fundraisers like Run to the Shrine help keep the Zoo “running.” \n  \nTo register and get all the details (or to volunteer)\, visit cmzoo.org/run. DESCRIPTION:The Disabled American Veterans will be hosting its 103rd Annual DAV (Disabled American Veterans) Convention which will be held on May 20-22nd at The Embassy Suites in Colorado Springs. The start time is 11 am until 3 pm. \nStarting May 20th\, the Disabled American Veterans will be having a Veterans & Military Expo and Appreciation Event! There will be over 20 Veterans Service Organizations and Resource support tables for veterans and their families. \nThere will be Native American dancing\, a woodcarving demonstration\, souvenirs and t-shirts. \nResource tables include Benefit Claims and initial intakes\, The Honor Bell\, Color Guards\, Veterans Memorials and Foundations\, all sharing valuable information. \nPresentations\, Meet & Greet with Local/State and National Disabled American Veterans and other VSO Officers\, which will be available for interviews. \nOn May 21-22nd our resource tables remain available as the Convention will be charting the course for how the state will serve its veterans throughout the year. \nOur mission is to provide our heroes with the care\, resources and support they need to regain their independence and live fulfilling lives. We are dedicated to a single purpose; empowering veterans and their families to lead high quality lives with respect and dignity. \nWe thank you for helping us spread the word about our event. The start time is 11 am until 3 pm. \nStarting May 20th\, the Disabled American Veterans will be having a Veterans & Military Expo and Appreciation Event! There will be over 20 Veterans Service Organizations and Resource support tables for veterans and their families. \nThere will be Native American dancing\, a woodcarving demonstration\, souvenirs and t-shirts. \nResource tables include Benefit Claims and initial intakes\, The Honor Bell\, Color Guards\, Veterans Memorials and Foundations\, all sharing valuable information. \nPresentations\, Meet & Greet with Local/State and National Disabled American Veterans and other VSO Officers\, which will be available for interviews. \nOn May 21-22nd our resource tables remain available as the Convention will be charting the course for how the state will serve its veterans throughout the year. \nOur mission is to provide our heroes with the care\, resources and support they need to regain their independence and live fulfilling lives. We are dedicated to a single purpose; empowering veterans and their families to lead high quality lives with respect and dignity. \nWe thank you for helping us spread the word about our event. SUMMARY:Learn or Burn:  A Crash Course in Wildfire Mitigation and Firefighting
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will go through fire mitigation and wildfire education\, with a step-by-step checklist on how to arm your home against the inevitable wildfire.  Ed is trained in wildfire mitigation and now serves as his neighborhood’s representative to Monument’s fire department.  He inspects homes to guide mitigation.  He also holds a patent on a wildfire fighting aircraft\, which resulted from extensive research into wildfire. \nEd Herlik: MA in National Security Studies from California State University and a BS in Engineering and Political Science from the US Air Force Academy.

DESCRIPTION:May is Military Appreciation month\, and we appreciate all the men and women who serve\, and we also want to appreciate the creative side of our service men and women and their families. All the art in this exhibit was created by a person in service or a relation. The theme of the art is nondescript\, focusing on each artist’s specific style- landscape\, wildlife\, fighter planes and much more. \n  \nPlease join us for our 3rd Friday Reception is May 16\, 2025 from 4-7 p.m. for snacks and a chance to show your appreciation to these amazing men and women. The exhibit will hang for the full month of May.
