The Thin Line: Assessing for Domestic Violence in Couples Therapy
Couples therapists are on the front lines of assessing for and appropriately handling cases of domestic violence. It is contraindicated to continue providing couples therapy when there is domestic violence present, however, there can be power and control dynamics used within many couples that do not fit the criteria for domestic violence. Do you feel confident in assessing these dynamics with your couple clients? When you determine that there is coercive control and violence within one of your couples do you feel confident in what to do next? This training will have an education-based/didactic component as well as an interactive/group component to best learn how to incorporate the knowledge learned into your work with your clients. After attending this training, you will learn: the research and contraidications of providing couples therapy when domestic violence is present the red flag behaviors and nuances that domestic violence is present with in the couple to identify the level of power and control dynamics to determine if couples therapy is contraindicated the differences between situational violence between couples and true use of domestic violence tactics to gain and maintain power and control over an intimate partner ways to get out of the counseling relationship in an ethical way while managing the victim clients' safety if domestic violence is present There will be a lot of information shared at this training. While there will be an interactive component, it may be beneficial to receive supervision or consultation around this issue to put the knowledge into practice.
