Stepping Up to Supervision: How to Increase Your Influence with Others This workshop provides an overview of fundamentals and best practices to help you become a more effective supervisor. Through discussions, self-reflection, classroom activities, and real-life scenarios, you will be able to reflect on your supervisory potential, learn tools to becoming an exceptional leader, and strengthen skills around working with your team. You will create a customized action plan to enhance your leadership influence and you will take back to your organization a myriad of practical tools to take your team to the next level.  Objectives:   1.    Discover your supervisory skill gaps and learn how to capitalize on your strengths  2.    Recognize how you can best equip your team members for success 3.    Discover your leadership style and ways to best connect with all styles 4.    Recognize the value of coaching, recognition, and people management  5.    Increase your value as a competent and trustworthy leader  Timed Outline: Time Slot Content Interactive Activities 9:00-10:30 AM Overview of the Five Steps to Become a Supervisor: 1.     Identify your Why 2.     Assess your Current Abilities 3.     Know the Fundamentals 4.     Lean in for Learning and Leadership Opportunities 5.     Showcase your Value   Step 1: Identify your Why (This step covers the importance of leaders knowing their “why” they want to become a supervisor.  Step 2: Assess your Current Abilities (This step involves a number of self-assessments where participants will assess their current strengths and discover growth areas) M&M activity at the beginning for Introductions (color of M&M relates to a getting to know you question)  Each person to identify their own “why” of what they would like to become a supervisor – share with a partner Each person to assess their own current abilities using the self-assessment and checklist with table group activity to discuss strengths and opportunities  Best practices – group activity - to transition from peer to supervisor and “managing up” 10:45 to 12:15 Step 3: Know the Fundamentals (Onboarding, Relational Awareness, leadership style, team performance and metrics, and building a team)     Pair and Share with a partner – onboarding practice  Class Activity – card game where each person identifies their management style (based upon the Everything DiSC Management style) This activity helps each person increase their own relational awareness (capitalize their strengths) and provides practical strategies to use this knowledge with their own manager, direct reports, teams or work relationships). Divide group into smaller groups to discuss the components of an effective team and discuss examples of team metrics 1:00 to 2:30 Step 3: Know the Fundamentals (continued) (Managing performance, recognition and motivation; Coaching others)  Step 4: Lean in for Learning and Leadership Opportunities (Participants will explore all the ways they can capitalize on learning and leadership opportunities) Step 5: Showcase your Value (Participant will discover the ways to showcase their value to their managers/peers) Case Scenarios (real-life supervisory performance management case scenarios); discuss in groups) Best practices competition to recognize others that don’t involve money Coaching one-on-one (Partners will coach each other on a real-life challenge) Mind map of all the ways that participants can take advantage of learning and leadership opportunities    About Jan Dwyer Bang, MBA, CSP Jan Dwyer Bang, MBA, CSP owns Boundless Results, a speaking, training, consulting, and coaching business located in Sumner, Washington.
