Opening Reception for MaKenna/Austin-Rolo Solo Exhibitions
Denver’s New Contemporary Art Gallery in the Santa Fe Art District
Hosts Two Artists in Solo Exhibitions: Carrie MaKenna & Kelly Austin-Rolo
Located at 900 Santa Fe Drive, the second exhibition cycle for the D’art Gallery, “Topographic Groundwork”, features two member artists: Carrie MaKenna and Kelly Austin-Rolo. The exhibition runs from Thursday, September 19 through Sunday, October 13. The two artists will host an Opening Reception from 6 – 9 pm on Friday, September 20, 2019. Carrie MaKenna will give an Artist Talk on Sunday, September 29 from 1 – 2 pm.
“Topographic Groundwork” is a duet of solo exhibitions that combines the unique expression by each artist that displays the interconnectedness between nature and human experience. Both artists create pieces with rich textures that rise above the flat surface of their chosen substrate to give anyone viewing the work a topographic experience. The gallery will be divided to give a dedicated space to each artist to display an entire body of work.
Carrie MaKenna creates paintings that explore the deep interconnections within human relationships, and with nature and the universe. Her paintings of abstracted landscapes, oceanscapes and skyscapes, evoke memories of moments that matter in an otherwise hectic life. They reach into nature to pull out significant experiences through the expressive colors, textures and movements seen and felt out-of-doors.
MaKenna graduated from Colorado State University with a BFA in Graphic Design and from Naropa University with a Masters Degree in Art Therapy. Her work has evolved over three decades as she developed a specialized pallet of sixteen colors of liquid acrylic. Building up texture on her canvas she sculpts and paints with an array of implements, brushes, her hands and found objects to remind the viewer of their interconnection with the natural world, cycles of time and memories, thoughts, and feelings.
The work created by Kelly Austin-Rolo reflects the influence of urban, rural and coastal landscapes and how these environments can be viewed, understood and transcended. Her abstract art creates a relationship between the elements of built environments and the natural world turning the work into a virtual space arising out of her process.
Austin-Rolo graduated from Syracuse University with a BFA in Design. She is inspired by unending possibilities of the media she uses from creating texture, scraping, and fusing the wax with a torch to create smooth surfaces. Intrigued by the fragile but durable qualities of beeswax, her work moves from transparency to textured depth.
The juxtaposition of both solo exhibitions provides a unique experience to explore the topography of our world as we wind our way through human built environments and nature through the stories of our lives. MaKenna and Austin-Rolo are founding members of D’art Gallery.
Gallery Hours are Thursdays, Noon to 5pm, Fridays, Noon to 9 pm, Saturdays, Noon to 5 pm, and Sundays, 1 pm to 4 pm.
