Cantata Insights: Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis in meinem Herzen, BWV 21
Bach's largest sacred cantata opens with an atmosphere similar to Tomaso Albinoni's (Giazotto) famous Adagio. The sublime and sorrowful Aria for Soprano and Oboe "Sighing, Weeping, Sorrow, Need" has been called the emotional heart of this cantata. Perhaps an homage to Antonio Vivaldi, Bach borrows a theme from his Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 3, No. 11, for a grand fugue subject. Sponsored by Ann Kirchhoff
