NPM Course on Wetland/Riparian Plants - Mondays, 7/23, 7/30, 8/6; 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Monday, July 23, 2018, 3:30 PM

Take a Native Plant Master® course at this multifaceted riverside park with streamside plant communities. Learn the identity and lifestyles of Colorado native rushes, sedges, grasses and shrubs of the Front Range as you explore wetlands and riparian areas of South Platte Park along the South Platte River.  During three outdoor field sessions, you will learn common and scientific names, ecological relationships and human uses of 40 - 50 plants.  You will also develop skills in using family features and a botanical key to identify plants.  Course includes special emphasis on natives useful for landscaping and alien invasives that threaten native ecosystems.  Trainer:  Skot Latona is the Supervisor of South Platte Park and a Certified Interpretive Guide and Trainer. He has worked at South Platte Park since 1998.  Beth Hanson served as the Education Manager at Hudson Gardens and has been a Naturalist at South Platte since 2005. Prerequisite:  Basic Botany Class is recommended for those who would like to refresh their botanical knowledge and is required for those who have minimal background in botany. Contact lvernon@jeffco.us for questions. Native Plant Master:  All participants who pass three NPM courses will receive a Colorado Flora Certificate. For accepted volunteers, this course counts toward certification as a Native Plant Master.
